Handcrafted Seashell Earrings: Coastal Elegance.

Tell us about your jewellery and how did your journey begin?

I made my first beaded jewelry on a normal working day, in the office. I didn’t have much to do for work at that time so I bought a lot of beads… then I got addicted and I made more and more jewelry just for fun. I wore them in the office and gave some of them to my friends, who then said that I should sell these online, but I didn’t think I had the time to do this when I have a full time job. 

Every piece is made from seashells, can you expand on that?

One day a friend showed me some shells she picked up during vacation, and asked if I could make jewelry out of these. I was totally fascinated by those beautiful seashells and made some earrings for her right away. We were all very excited with those beautiful pieces, and for the first time I thought I could share these with more people. For several years, I’ve also been thinking about my work/life choices like should I always stay in the office? The answer is definitely no and I think it was time. Those seashells were a changing point in my life. So I just quit my job without any doubts, and moved to a small town with my husband.

Where do you source the seashells from?  Do you find them yourself?

We travel a lot and when we go to the seaside, I always collect shells for jewelry making. I started learning things about seashells doing my own background research on them. I often go to the seaside to scout for seashells, but sometimes I buy them online. 

It’s clear you’re inspired by nature, the coast and seashells. How do you approach each piece since the seashells are all unique? Are there any other materials you would consider working with?

This journey is full of fun and beautiful scenery. I’m still feeling really happy for the choice I made. I never really “design” anything or make plans for these, so it’s hard to say how I approach each piece. When all the shapes and colours are in front of me, it’s natural to see how things look beautiful together. I also like to give each pair a name, it’s just for me to better remember them. Apart from seashells, I usually use pearls, natural stones, beads and silver or gold-filled parts.

 

Do you offer custom designs?

Since I started this little business, many people have asked if I could make custom designs, but I haven’t made any, because shells are just so unique, any little variation makes a big difference in the outcome. 

You primarily focus on earrings, do you have plans to expand to other pieces?

I’m considering more types of different jewellery, but I think earrings are the best way to present the uniqueness and beauty of seashells. I’ll keep working on this and other things, so please stay tuned!
